November 1, 2001
The 2001 season has come and gone. The weekend of Oct. 20th and 21st our team was in Las Vegas for the AHDRA Jim's Las Vegas Nationals to compete in what was to be one of the closest championship races ever. After returning from a very successful trip to the East Coast we found ourselves in the warm sun of Las Vegas and prepared ourselves to battle for the National Championship. We rented the racetrack on Thursday before the race so that we could do some testing for the less than perfect air conditions that we found ourselves in. It was a very good thing that we did since our day was plagued with electrical and ignition problems that hadn't occurred all year. We weren't able to run any good numbers on Thursday however it was a successful day because we were able to determine a number of the problems and correct them. We went into Saturday's qualifying and ran 8.14 seconds in round 1 and then 8.13 seconds in round 2 knowing that there was still a small problem somewhere. With only one other bike having run a 7 second pass, we knew if we found the problem we could go out in the 3rd and last round and take the #1 qualifying spot. We found the problem and were able to do what we had intended and ran a 7.89 second pass in round 3, the final round of qualifying to move us into the #1 position. Later in round 3 we were bumped to #2 by John McMillan when he ran a 7.88 second pass. Things were looking good for Sunday's eliminations as we made it through each round and into the finals. Going into the finals we were 9 points ahead of Larry Brancaccio for the National championship and all we had to do is beat him one more time. Our 7.85 second pass unfortunately did not beat Larry's pass of 7.92 second pass. I know this sounds crazy for those unfamiliar with the technicalities of drag racing but races are also won and lost by a rider's reaction time at the starting line. Larry's reaction time was better than Steve's and he was unable to go around him at the finish line. His margin of victory was .0092 seconds. That is exactly why you should never bet on a drag race, even in Las Vegas. With that loss we also lost the National Championship by 11 points. It was a great race and a great season and got even better at the awards banquet. On Monday our team received the Best Appearing Team award for the 2nd year in a row and the Wrench of the Year award which recognizes our team's efforts through the season mechanically and the effort it took to get 2 World records. Our Top Fuel bike efforts were also great this year. Having only competed in 4 races we were able to finish with the #9 National plate which we feel is a great accomplishiment as there were over 60 bikes that competed in 2001. Most importantly we achieved our goal which was how to run the Top Fuel bike safely and successfully. |

| There were records falling faster than they could be reported, followed by surprises in the finals, all jammed into one day at the Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Rockingham Nationals. It was enough to challenge any race reporter to pick the headlines for this one.
After, rain cancelled Saturday’s qualifying at Rockingham Dragway, AHDRA officials were forced to condense one of the biggest event’s of the season into one day of action. And that action-packed day kicked off under cool, sunny skies and it ended with warm celebrations.
Starting with the 200mph hour nitro show in JIMS Top Fuel, Mark Cox and the Crossroad H-D team started their hometown fans off with plenty to cheer about, when they came off the trailer with a 6.661 at 205.32 miles-per-hour, giving them the #1 qualifying spot which held after 13 other Nitro-Harleys attempted to reach the top honor. H-D of Seaford’s, Bob Malloy, fresh off a victory at Maple Grove was in the running with a 6.762/196.19 followed by Holland’s, Stan Verheijen in the #3 spot with a 6.762 at 189.90 miles-per-hour.
Elimination’s got underway with Cox advancing over Larry Stanley that would earn him a bye run in round two. Orangeburg Cycles, Bill Furr (#4 qualifyer) blazed by Tommy Sloan with a 6.607 at 202.58 miles-per-hour, which would be the quickest time of the day. Raleigh, NC’s, Ray Price advanced to face Furr in round two with a 6.815/206.45mph pass. Price advanced over Furr with another good pass to meet fellow Carolina competitor, Mark Cox. It was set to be the best side-by-side action of the day, but after problems for Price, Cox took the final round bid with a 6.745 at 195.48 miles-per-hour. A surprise challenger, for some, would line up next to Cox.
Making the trip from Seattle, WA, Steve Huff’s goal was to seek the Pro Drag Championship. The JIMS Top Fuel category is new to Huff and he barely had time to work on the previously owned, Jim McClure machine between rounds, with a small crew and his focus on the other bike. After a bye run in round two, Huff found himself facing Malloy in the semis and would also find himself in the finals after the upset win over the #2 qualifyer. The showdown for the top prize was set with a hometown favorite, and a west coast visitor. Cox would take the win with a 6.735 at 198.79mph pass, his first of the season. Huff later said; he was surprised as anybody to get that far. “I looked around and started getting really nervous in the semi’s when I saw Ray Price, Bob Malloy and Mark Cox. I thought to myself, this is the best company I have been around in a long, long time”. Mark Cox, on the other hand says it’s never a surprise to see a newcomer in the finals. “You never know in Top Fuel. Never count anybody out in this class”.
Cox says that consistency works for his team, and we try not to beat ourselves. “Basically we were tuned to the track today with the cool temps, and concentrating on not over-tuning or blowing the tire. Today consistency won the race for us and we are real pleased with it.” The Crossroad H-D team plans to compete for a repeat victory at the upcoming JIMS Las Vegas Nationals.
In Pro Fuel, it was no surprise to see Tim Kerrigan and the Red Line Oil team in the #1 spot after qualifying and making their way to the finals, for a “seven in a row” win, and locking up the National Championship. Kerrigan has wowed the competition all year with six second passes and it was no different at Rockingham Dragway. Kerrigan also came away with more records in the 1/8-mile ranks with a 192.60mph pass.
Another newcomer in the finals gave the hometown fans more to celebrate when, Winston-Salem’s, Tii Tharpe advanced for a first time Pro Fuel final on the Kool Competition owned bike. Tharpe’s round two win over top contender, Chris Streeter was the upset round of the day in Pro Fuel after Tharpe’s .481 reaction time and a 7.559 at 150.35 miles-per-hour took out Streeter’s .544 tree with a 7.659/134.89mph pass. The Kerrigan-Tharpe final ended in a scary moment at the big end when Kerrigan's front tire came down out of shape, sending him sharply in the other lane throwing sparks from the pipes. Luckily, Tharpe says, he had enough out of the machine and had shut off early, knowing Kerrigan had the win, keeping him well distanced and both riders came away safely. Earlier in the day, John Cislak of Indian Orchid, MA, was injured when he came off his Pro Fuel machine. Cislak was treated for several fractures and abrasions and has been released from the Richmond County Hospital.
Thunder Eagle Racing’s, Tom Bradford rocked the competition in S & S Cycle Pro Stock action with the event win and a new National record. Bradford actually made three record passes, the first in qualifying with a 7.528, but it was the 7.500 in round two of eliminations that would go down in the books. Bradford took on the current record holder (at that time) Dave Feazell and shattered the books with the 7.500 at 172.01 miles-per-hour. The pass was backed up in the finals when Bradford defeated, Oregon’s, Dan Baisley with a 7.518/170.17 pass. Baisley and the Hannon Racing team also added to the 7.50 ranks with an earlier 7.572 pass over Dale Raudenbush. Bradford and the S & S/Hal’s H-D sponsored team came away with two more for the books with the 1/8th mile ET honors (4.740) and a 151.33 mph record pass.
An emotional Bradford says he has to hand it to all the help he has had, including Keith, Rob, Mom & Dad and everybody that’s had a part in supporting him all year. “It’s meant a great deal to me.” The Wisconsin rider can relax in the #1 point’s chase with this weekend’s record adding to his lead over reigning champion, Dirk Higgins (Thiel’s Wheel’s).
Call it a true “Sleepless in Seattle” saga as Steve Huff has wrestled with thoughts of a National Championship since entering the Carolina Kenworth Pro Drag ranks. He traveled to the east three times this year to pursue the title and came away with a win at each of them. The obstacle in his way, a seasoned, three-bike rider who is no stranger to National Championships. Drums Brancaccio and the Out of Time/Bammer Racing team has seen their name at the top of the Pro Drag ladder all year in addition to a strong showing in the JIMS Top Fuel point’s battle, but the Pro Drag line-up for points will change after Huff’s win at Rockingham Dragway. The totals are not in, but Huff should move into the #1 spot and this one could come down to the wire at the JIMS Las Vegas Nationals. Huff took on Brancaccio in the finals, and although Brancaccio was quicker at the light with a .465, Huff rode for the ¼ mile win with a 7.785 at 167.78 miles-per-hour over Drum’s 7.877/160.73 pass. The Znetix/S&S sponsored team held the low ET at 7.759 and the Top MPH with a 169.55 mph pass. They also took home the 1/8th mile record with a 154.32mph pass.
“We accomplished our goal in Pro Drag, #1 qualifyer, low ET, top mph and the win”, a elated Huff commented. “The Top Fuel thing was an added bonus..A big bonus”.
The Joker Machine Pro Modified final had extra flare when friends and travel mates, John Hammock and Kurt Matte faced off for the trophy. Adding to the story, Matte of Lafayette, LA was riding a bike owned by his opponent, John Hammock. Hammock joked as the two pulled to the line, that Matte would have to walk home if he beat him, and it looks like Matte has a long walk ahead as he pulled out the win over Hammock with an 8.690/149.20 over Hammock’s, 8.990/115.85.
The two showed up in good spirits for the winner’s circle ceremony with plenty to smile about. Matte with the win and a wrapped up Joker Machine Pro Modified title for Hammock. “I want to thank Kurt for riding my bike this weekend”, a supportive Hammock commented. This bike has been sitting around at the shop since last year, and with the controversy over the 8.5 carb, I knew it could run a good number. Kurt proved that with a good bike and good rider, he could get the job done. We’ve got a hurt cylinder on it, but we will be in Vegas with it and maybe meet in the finals again”.
The #1 qualifyer, Ron Serio of Millers, MD came away with a new 1/8th mile record in Rockingham after a 129.70 pass, backed up with a 131.93mph run. Serio also held the low ET with an 8.532.
In Pro Gas, it was not a smooth road to the winner’s circle for the D & S Cycle team, but they will take it. After problems throughout the day that resulted in a motor change between rounds, rider Joe Marchant held it together for the team, and defeated Baltimore, MD’s, Scott Ianaro for the win. The win put Marchant and bike owner, Dan Vance back in first for National point’s, which will now come to a showdown in Vegas with close contender, John “Jet” Peek. A proud Dan Vance said, “We really struggled today, and it looks like I’ve got a lot of work to do when I get home. We flamed it out on almost every pass, and she’s not happy, (the bike, that is). There’s definitely a problem, but thanks to a good driver with a throttle on to the end focus, it got us to the winner’s circle”.
Marchant took the low ET spot with a 7.660 and H-D of Washington’s Frank Dove scored the top speed with a 168.87mph pass.
More from the “Carolina Boys” as Asheville, NC’s, Travis Lummus (Gene Lummus H-D) cruised to another victory, and a 2nd National Championship title. Lummus came away with all the top numbers, including his 9.647, low ET, and a 140.74 top speed and adding another spot in the record books with a 1/8-mile 117.18mph pass. Lummus took on Daytona, Florida’s, Doug Morrow (Carl’s Speed Shop) in the finals and the win came with a 9.796 at 139.08 miles-per-hour over Morrow’s, 10.299/137.93 pass.
A relieved Lummus says, the win meant a lot after Morrow put him on the trailer at last year’s Rockingham event. “This year, we put him on the trailer and we did it with a motor we built and help from T-Man Performance heads”.
In Super Gas Index racing, Team 911 and the “Wood Pile” hung in there for the finals and cheered, Dale Tyson of Gainesville, VA on for a win over reigning champion, Paul Smith of Uniontown, OH.
In Super Sport, H-D of Washington’s, Anthony Whelan scored another win and wrapped up a Championship. Whelan of Brandywine, MD, and last year’s Street Eliminator champion took the win in Rockingham over #1 qualifyer, Wanda Poff of York, PA. Whelan credits his outstanding year to his sponsor, H-D of Washington along with Gene Hinkle, Frank Dove, Don Tayman, his Uncle Buddy and his wife and kids.
Bob Drapp of Orlando, FL was the winner in Street Eliminator over #1 qualifyer, Harry Montgomery and it was another Maryland rider taking a win at “The Rock” when John Henderson (H-D of Annapolis) took the Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts victory and another step closer to the National Championship.
In Andrew’s ET competition, Craig Drago (New Iberia, LA) and Brent Garcia (Cinncinnatus, NY) faced off with Drago taking the win.
Thanks to this year’s sponsors at AHDRA’s 9th Rockingham Dragway appearance, including Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts and the Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association.
The next stop on the AHDRA National point’s series is the final event of the season, where multiple championships are up for grabs at the JIMS Las Vegas Nationals presented by Las Vegas Harley-Davidson. |

With a 8-bike field on tap in JIMS Top Fuel, there are 12 entries in for Pro Fuel competition, the largest Pro Fuel field of the year. All eyes will be on the Red Line Oil, Tim Kerrigan team as track conditions should hand them six second blasts down the 1/4 mile with no problem. Johnny Kool is here and it's Tii Tharpe riding for the Kool Competition Pro Fuel team. Another one that could bring in the quick numbers, is Virginia's, Chad Cox. Another impressive entry count..S & S Cycle Pro Stock is up to nine entries, and 14 plus are on tap in Joker Machine Pro Modified. A full update will follow, after completion of Round One.

Track Records Fall at MapleGrove Raceway.. Qualifying is complete at the Screamin' Eagle Performance Race of Champions with three new track records for the books!
H-D of Seaford's, Bob Malloy heated up the final round on the high gear machine with a 6.625 at 204.82 miles-per-hour, breaking his 6.689 E.T. set here at last year's Race of Champions. Malloy took over the #1 spot, moving Ziggy Stewart to the #2 spot with a 6.766. Steve Moore and Chicago Joe are both in the show and running tight with a 6.933 for Moore and a 6.936 for Chicago Joe. Tim Kerrigan finished on top in Pro Fuel and points contender, Chris Streeter barely got in with the #8 spot. A true battle took place in S & S Cycle Pro Stock and the #1 spot changed yet again, after S & S rider, Dave Feazell ran an amazing 7.57 at 178.40 miles-per-hour taking the #1 spot from Dan Baisley and setting a new track record. Baisley moved to the third spot after Tom Bradford answered Feazell's dynamic run with an impressive 7.596 at 178.19 miles-per-hour giving him the #2 spot. Champion, Dirk Higgins finished in the 4th spot with a 7.616. In Carolina Kenworth Pro Drag, Steve Huff kept the #1 spot with a 7.733 and can back up an 1/8th mile record if he backs up his 5.122 3rd round pass.
The D & S Cycle team had a triumph finish after suffering ignition problems earlier in the day. Joe Marchant piloted the Pro Gas machine to the #1 qualifying spot with a 7.812 at 164.17 miles-per-hour. Duke Dugan moved to 2nd with Ken Browne in the 3rd spot.
Scott Tepper took over the lead position in Joker Machine Pro Modified with a 8.804 at 141.12 miles-per-hour moving Randy Long and Rick Muise to the #2 and #3 spots.
Travis Lummus finished in the Dynojet Street Pro lead with his 9.682 at 142.26 miles-per-hour, good enough for a new track record, which he set at last year's race here with a 10.103. Vincent DiFiore was the #1 qualifyer in Street Eliminator, 10.90 index class and Jordan Cruz is cruising with the #1 spot in the Super Gas 9.90 class. Bruce Terreson and Anthony Whelan are in the #1 and #2 spots, respectively in Super Sport, 10.50 action and Robert Terreson holds on to the SEP pole in the 11.50 competition.<

Elimination Day At MapleGrove Raceway
Good morning from MapleGrove, PA. We are back under cool slightly breezy conditions today, however an added bonus is sunshine making an appearance today. With good air and the sun adding a little heat to the track, we are looking for big numbers at today's Screamin' Eagle Performance Parts Race of Champions. A few notes from the pits: Tim Kerrigan and the Red Line Oil team put a new motor in the Pro Fuel Machine last night. "We are a little nervous", Kerrgian said this morning. "It's our first time changing the motor, but it fired right up last night, so we think it will be fine. We talked to Larry McBride who says we need to relax and focus." Easy for McBride to say, Kerrigan faces Chris Streeter in round one. Kerrigan will need to get by Streeter to rest a bit more comfortably in the points lead. Streeter trails by less than 100 points and a win here today could put him back in front. Cerini Harley-Davidson's, Russ Hildenbrand could add plenty of spark to the show today, after joining Kerrigan in the six-second club with yesterday's 6.883 at 194.58 miles-per-hour.
There's no way to make the call in S & S Cycle Pro Stock category after three lead changes and the fastest field ever on hand here at Maple Grove Raceway. Feazell will lead off the show against Dale Raudenbush.
Rumor has it there may be a couple of damaged bikes in Carolina Kenworth Pro Drag, but no confirmed withdrawals at this time. Steve Huff's bike is ready to go and he comes out in round one elimination's against Brian "Weasle" Skinner. (Happy Birthday Weasle!)
In Pro Gas, a disappointed Ken Browne had to withdraw from elimination's after his bike broke. This field will be wide open today with top contenders Joe Marchant (D &S Cycle) and John Peek on tap along with returning favorite, Duke Dugan, all qualifying in the 7's. A 16-bike field is coming your way in Joker Machine Modified with #1 qualifyer, Scott Tepper coming out in round one to face Paul Banach. Travis Lummus comes out on a bye run in Dynojet Street Pro and Ray Devine will need a flawless day to have half a shot at catching him in the point's. It's another Devine providing the numbers this weekend, with brother Kelly, running in the 9's, and taking the #2 qualifying spot.
Dan Degood must have had a good night's rest, he just ran an Andrew's ET test pass and cut a perfect .500 light. Nice job Dan.
We are just about to wrap up test and tuning and following the driver's meeting, elimination's are set to begin t 12.30pm.
Stay tuned for the round one action at MapleGrove Raceway.
Eliminations Underway! Round One of elimination's are in full swing, and the JIMS Top Fuel field kicked off with a disappointing loss for point's leader, Steve Moore after something went away on the East Coast Motorcycle Lift Machine. Bob Spina (William's H-D/Nat'l Tattoo) advanced in round one with a 6.968 at 200.26 miles-per-hour. Chicago Joe riding for Ground Pounders racing got a competition boost after advancing over Drums Brancaccio with a 6.916. Jessey Fenton. owner of Ground Pounders, says, "This is big for us". "With everything happening in the points with Moore and Drums so close, this was a huge round win for us. We left the tune unchanged after yesterday, which we should have done in Woodburn. We made changes overnight in Woodburn which cost us." No problems for Kerrigan with the new motor, as he advanced over Streeter with a 6.802. Russ Hildenbrand also nailed another Pro Fuel six, advancing over John Cislak. In S & S Cycle Pro Stock, Dave Feazell set the first record of the event with a new 1/4 mile ET 7.530! The show continues and results are coming your way.. Elimination's Round One

BOB MALLOY WINS BIG IN JIMS TOP FUEL AND FEAZELL SCORES A NEW NATIONAL RECORD IN THE QUICKEST PRO STOCK FIELD FOR AHDRA AT MAPLEGROVE RACEWAY
Cool tempatures and rain in surrounding areas kept the crowds down, but the competition was hot at the Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Race of Champions.
Harley-Davidson of Seaford’s, Bob Malloy showed off his nitro pilot skills throughout the entire weekend, taking the #1 qualifying spot Saturday with a 6.625 at 204.82 miles-per-hour and with the tuning skills from D.J. Johnson scored the JIMS Top Fuel win with a 6.662 at 200.44 miles-per-hour. It was Malloy’s first win of the season and the jubilant winner from Maryland says he may be back for more. “I may just go to Rockingham and Vegas now. I bet nobody’s thought about me getting in the point’s chase.” Malloy is right about that. All eyes have been on the top contender’s, Chicago Joe, Steve Moore and Drums Brancaccio. Once again, the leader will change, with unofficial results moving Richmond, California’s Chicago Joe back in front, after Moore suffered an early first round loss. Robert “Ziggy” Stewart was also full of steam this weekend, laying down consistent 6’s and taking the runner-up spot with a 6.899/158.19mph final round pass.
You might say six is the lucky number for the Red Line Oil team, piloted by California’s, Tim Kerrigan. Kerrigan scored a sixth consecutive win at MapleGrove Raceway with a 6.830 at 189.92 miles-per-hour. A nervous Kerrigan, was under pressure Sunday, after a first time motor change on the Pro Fuel machine, but his team came through with a 6.802/187.86mph pass in round one, taking out FBM Racing’s, Chris Streeter. Kerrigan’s win gives him a strong lead for the national championship title. Cerini Harley-Davidson’s, Russ Hildenbrand added six second Pro Fuel action to the show, advancing in Round one with a 6.895 at 190.70 miles-per-hour, but suffered problems in round two against, Virgina’s, Chad Cox. Cox broke in the finals to take the runner-up spot.
This year’s Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Race of Champions goes down in the record books after hosting the quickest S & S Cycle Pro Stock field in AHDRA competition. The #1 qualifying spot changed in all three rounds with Feazell ending up with the pole with a 7.571 at 178.40 miles-per-hour, which would ultimately back up a new national record pass when he came out on Sunday, blazing the ¼ mile with a 7.530 at 176.93. Thunder Eagle Racing’s Tom Bradford took the #2 qualifying spot with an impressive, 7.596/178.19 pass, but was taken out by Pro Stock veteran, Dan Baisley of Hannon Racing. Baisley’s 7.601/178.64mph pass gave him the #3 spot and he followed with 7.5’s on Sunday before breaking in the finals. S & S/Two Wheel Travel’s, Dave Feazell also suffered damage in the finals, but came away with the win and a new national record at Maple Grove Raceway. Dirk Higgins and the Jon Miller/Thiel’s Wheels team ran strong with a 7.580 on Sunday, but could not hold on over Feazell in Round two. Tom Bradford leads this point’s chase, and both he and Higgin’s will be pulling out all the stops in Rockingham next weekend.
Seattle’s Steve Huff added west coast action in the Carolina Kenworth Pro Drag category, taking the #1 qualifying spot at 7.733 and the top speed at 178.47 miles-per-hour. Huff is after a first time championship and he met the point’s leader, Drums Brancaccio (Out of Time/Bammer Racing) in the finals to make his move. Huff came way with the win with a 7.843/161.46mph pass moving him closer to his chance at a championship. Huff will compete in next weekend’s Rockingham Nationals, where a win could give him the lead.
John “Jet” Peek holds the Pro Gas lead and moved forward with a win over Duke Dugan. D & S Cycle’s, Joe Marchant held the #1 qualifying spot with a 7.812 at 164.17 miles-per-hour, but his day would end after breaking in Sunday’s round two elimination’s.
The bittersweet win of the day would have to go to David Poague of Mannass, VA. Poague had the race of a lifetime, laying down his quickest times ever, which included his final pass for the Joker Machine Pro Modified win with a 8.641 at 147.09 miles-per-hour. The price he paid was a blown motor. The costly win had little affect on Poague’s first win celebration as he rolled the badly damaged machine to the winner’s circle with a victory smile. Poague faced Westchester, PA’s Scott Tepper in the finals and a rare red light foul gave him the runner-up finish. Tepper has cut the eyes out of the competition all year with his sharp reaction times, and kicked it off early in the season with a perfect .400.
Travis Lummus (Gene Lummus H-D) moved closer to locking up the Dynojet Street Pro championship title after a win in MapleGrove. The Asheville, NC rider broke his own track record several times throughout the weekend, ending up with a 9.623 for the books. He faced Ohio’s, John Levak in the finals and came away with the win on a 9.625/140.31 pass.
Champion, Paul Smith (Freedom H-D) returned to the winner’s circle for a first 2001 season win after taking out Larry Simpson with a 9.871 at 130.94 miles-per-hour.
Louisiana’s, Billy Counts took Super Sport honors and John Burdynski added valuable point’s in the Street Eliminator category after a win over Bob Drapp. In Screamin’ Eagle Performance index action, Maryland’s John Henderson came away with a win and Jason Vansickle riding in his first competition, came away with the Andrew’s ET win.
Junior winners included Josh Gregorie in the 8-10 group and Orion Fichter came out on top in the 11-16 category.
Craig Drago took the cash in Saturday’s Showdown at Sunset.
AHDRA would like to thank Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts for supporting this year’s Race of Champions and a special thanks to the fine staff at MapleGrove Raceway for their hard work at running this safe event.

September 13. 2001-Picture perfect weather in Woodburn, Oregon brought out fierce competition, with over 200 entries and a record number of spectators for the All American Cycle Northwest Nationals presented by Joker Machine on September 8th & 9th. Nearly 7,000 fans filled the grandstands, making it the largest appearance ever for AHDRA at Woodburn Dragstrip.
The excitement was underway fast in Saturday’s JIMS Top Fuel qualifying, when Richmond, California’s, Chicago Joe came off the trailer with a 6.885 at 200.17 miles-per-hour giving him the #1 spot, that would hold for the day. The six-second show continued when Canadian, Robin Gauthier followed with a 6.984/198.50 for the #2 spot. Among those traveling the distance to Oregon, was Spartanburg, South Carolina’s, Steve Moore. Moore was looking to advance his point’s lead by competing at Woodburn Dragstrip, and after struggling in Round One, he was on the outside looking in. With 18 competitors entered, there was room for only sixteen on Sunday. Moore made tuning adjustments which improved his position in round two, and by the final round he had captured the # 2 spot. In Sunday’s elimination’s, upsets including a early loss for Chicago Joe and Canadian, Ron Houniet led Moore to face Liberty Racing’s, Steve Heidner. Heidner, a veteran Pro Fuel competitor entered the tough field and fought his way to the final round. After a motor change Saturday night, Moore came away with the victory with a 6.960 at 187.26 miles-per-hour over Heidner’s 7.189/186.29 and has taken over the National point’s lead. Moore also maintains the #1 one position in the eastern division. Moore says he left the bike tuned from his earlier Englishtown, NJ appearance. “After smoking the tire on that first pass, we quickly changed the tune”, Moore said later. “We barely got around O’Hara. If he hadn’t smoked the tire, we would have been in trouble. I had a lot of help from East Coast Motorcycle Lifts and Larry “Bimbo” Worley getting here. And I also want to thank T-Man Performance, Harley Britt and “My Daddy”, Bill Furr.”
In Pro Fuel, a continuation of Kerrigan domination. Red Line Oil’s, Tim Kerrigan brought the record crowd to their feet early Saturday with a 6.834 at 196.54 miles-per-hour. It earned him the #1 qualifying spot and would ultimately be the quickest pass of the weekend in Pro Fuel and Top Fuel competition. In Sunday’s elimination’s, Kerrigan’s riding skills were tested as he blazed the tire in round two, sending him left towards the center -line. He stayed in the throttle and straightened it out, pulling out a 7.432/184.44. In the final round match-up with Oregon’s Rick Bailor, Kerrigan nailed a 6.873 at 195.27 miles-per-hour for the win and the National point’s lead.
In the heated Bradford-Higgins battle for points, Thunder Eagle Racing’s, Tom Bradford had the early advantage with a 7.597/172.57 first round qualifying pass which would land him the #1 spot. But after losing primary parts, including a cylinder head, Bradford says they feared they would not have what it took to defeat Higgins in Sunday’s final round. Higgins and the Jon Miller/Thiel’s Wheels team had run consistent 7.6’s through-out the weekend, but after a rare red-light foul in the final round, the win would go to Bradford, who maintains his point’s lead. “With the loss of our primary parts the bike was running two tenths off after qualifying”, Bradford said later. “There was nothing magical we could have done to make it better, and the race should have been Dirk’s, but he red-lighted. We are not estatic about winning this way, but we’re happy to get the points”. A new National record and a first time win on a familiar bike headlined the Carolina Kenworth Pro Drag competition. Seattle’s Steve Huff opened up round one qualifying with a 7.634 at a record 180.28 miles-per-hour and backed it up in round two with a quicker 7.595 at 182.33, giving him a new National record and the #1 qualifying position. Huff was the favorite going into Sunday’s eliminations until he met that familiar machine in the finals. John McMillin was on hand riding the National championship Pro Dragster, recently purchased from Marc Augustine. That was just one advantage. The other, the Champion, himself, Marc Augustine came along to offer tuning assistance for the rookie rider. The bike held true to it’s performance along with good riding by McMillin as he came away with the win (7.724/167.13) competing for the first time in Carolina Kenworth Pro Drag. Huff finished 2nd with a 7.988/176.33 and has the #2 spot in National points. |

| DRAG RACING LEGEND, RAY PRICE TAKES TOP HONORS AT S & S CYCLE’S THUNDER IN THE VALLEY NATIONALS presented by SMITH BROTHER’S HARLEY-DAVIDSON, August 11-12, Bristol Dragway. |

|
After several weather delays, AHDRA hosted a thrilling finish to the S & S Cycle Thunder In The Valley Nationals presented by Smith Brother’s Harley-Davidson, August 11-12.
Raleigh, North Carolina’s, Ray Price competed at his 2nd AHDRA event of the season and came away with the win in JIMS Top Fuel competition over Wilkesboro, N.C’s, Mark Cox. Price struggled earlier in the season during his appearance at Norwalk Raceway, but his struggles were behind him as his Nitro Harley was dialed in for a strong showing at Bristol Dragway. Price (#3 qualifyer) advanced in rounds one and two with 7 second numbers and as the tracked cooled, Price heated up with a 3rd round 6.624/200.11 over Orangeburg Cycles, Bill Furr for his bid to the finals. Mark Cox, held the #1 qualifying spot and marked a personal best in Top Fuel competition, bringing the crowd to their feet with a round one, 6.631/207.75 and following up with a round two 6.675 at 212.76 miles-per-hour. After a win in round three over Jay Turner, Cox was set to face Price for a captivating final round. Price took the win with the quickest and fastest time of the weekend, a 6.561 at 214.35 miles-per-hour, over Cox’s 6.876/191.40. Cox taking the 2nd place finish, was happy with his performance at Bristol Dragway, “We have the right tune for this track and it worked for us all weekend with the tough track conditions”, he said later. “When the air cooled right before the finals, the tuning advantage was there for Ray”. The Ray Price Harley-Davidson team, elated with the win, announced tentative plans to compete at this weekend’s Englishtown event.

Seattle, Washington’s, Steve Huff made the long trip to compete at the premiere Bristol Dragway, and came away with a monumental weekend, taking his first ever win in Carolina Kenworth Pro Drag and his first ever six second pass in JIMS Top Fuel. Huff (#2 qualifyer) was consistent in the 7’s on Sunday on his Pro Dragster, and by round three it paid off when he ran a 7.686 at 178.85 miles-per-hour. The current National mile-per-hour record is 179.47, belonging to Champion, Marc Augustine. Huff made an emotional statement in the winner’s circle, dedicating his win to friend, Jon Andres whom he learned earlier in the day, was killed on his Top Fueler during an exhibition appearance in Spokane, WA. “This one is for Jon and my good buddies at Jarz Performance”, Huff stated.
Huff received help from the best when, Top Fuel icon, Jim McClure gave him a hand in getting his Top Fueler lined up for competition, and says, it made all the difference in accomplishing the six second pass. It was Jim and Phyllis McClure’s first appearance at an AHDRA event since the accident at Orlando’s season opener.
In Pro Fuel action, Red Line Oil’s, Tim Kerrigan smoked the competition once again with six second passes at over 190 miles-per-hour, taking the win over National points leader and tough competitor, Chris Streeter of Cleveland, OH. Kerrigan thrilled to be competing with the best in the sport, says he can hardly believe how good things are going for the Red Line Oil team. “I am just so thankful, for everyone’s support here”, Kerrigan said later. “Chris Streeter, Chad Cox and all the guys out here are just great, and I like to see everyone do well.” Kerrigan was also quick to give credit to Cerini Harley-Davidson’s, Russ Hildenbrand who blew the crowd away with a 6.999 in Round One at 204.66 miles-per-hour. “That was just awesome”, Kerrigan added. Hildenbrand was unable to back up what could have been a new record, when he broke in round two. Kerrigan advanced to the finals with Streeter and took the win with a 6.903/192.74 pass.
In S & S Cycle Pro Stock action, the event sponsor S & S Cycle, showed up in full force with S & S riders, Tom Bradford, Dave Feazell and Linda Jackson. Bradford, the current points leader and record holder was taken out in Round Two, when National Champion, Dirk Higgins (Thiel’s Wheel’s) scored a 7.797/171.75 over Bradford’s, 7.839/160.27. Higgins’s advanced to the finals to face, seasoned rider, Dave Feazell, and made the winning 7.841/172.54 winning pass after a red-light foul from Feazell.
Other event highlights included another win for Joe Marchant, riding for D & S Cycle in Pro Gas. Marchant qualifying in the #1 spot faced Champion, Ken Browne in the finals. Browne and Marchant ran strong all day and both had problems in the finals, as Browne broke on the line and Marchant struggled with a 9.865/113.11 winning pass. Marchant, Of Manassas, VA, has held the #1 qualifying spot at his last ten AHDRA Pro Gas appearances. Harley-Davidson of Washington’s Frank Dove, received crowd approval for a 7.892 at 181.84 miles-per-hour during round two action. Had he backed it up, it would have given him a new MPH National record, which currently belongs to Ken Browne at 173.38 miles-per-hour.
Dynojet Street Pro ended with “brotherly competition”, when Ray Devine faced brother, Kelly for the trophy. Ray took the win after Kelly broke at the line. Ray Devine advanced to the finals after a win over Champion, Travis Lummus of Asheville, N.C and Kelly Devine advanced over #1 qualifyer, Doug Morrow for the final round appearance.
In Joker Machine Pro Modified, #1 qualifyer, Mike Lozano took the win over #2 qualifyer and current points leader, John Hammock of Tulsa, OK.
The competition went well into the night after weather delays, but had little affect on the excitement displayed at the S&S Cycle Thunder In The Valley Nationals presented by Smith Brother’s Harley-Davidson. Over 260 racers entered the competition at Bristol Dragway, doubling last year’s entries.
This year’s event was made possible by S & S Cycle and Smith Brother’s Harley-Davidson. Special thanks to Caldwell’s Speed & Custom and Colbach Harley-Davidson for adding additional support to the weekend’s event.
The next stop on the AHDRA National Points Series tour is Englishtown, New Jersey for the Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts New Jersey Nationals, Old Bridge Township. The only one-day event of the tour is scheduled for August 19.

Pacific Nationals presented by Downtown Harley-Davidson, Destination Harley-Davidson & Eastside Harley-Davidson Good Morning from Seattle International Raceway! "Picture Perfect" conditions have welcomed AHDRA racers and fans, with sunny skies and mid 70 degree temps! They really DO have sunshine here, and the forecast calls for plenty more. This morning's driver's meeting was opened with special wishes of recovery for Dale Nungesser and Rocky Mann, who were both seriously injured after colliding in Denver. Both are facing long recoveries. 50/50 Drawings are being held here at SIR to aid in funds for both riders. Nungesser's #1 pit space was reserved this morning and marked appropriately with TF#1, and a "get well" banner hangs for fans to sign. We will send any new information on Rocky and Dale when it becomes available. We are just underway with practice runs and qualifying gets underway at 10:30am Registrations are still coming in, but from the tower, I see the JIMS Top Fuel pits are filling up with all the West Coast Favorites, including current National Points Leader, Chicago Joe,Bucky Varrone, Ron Houniet, Steve Huff, Kris Becker, Joe Timmons, Robin Gauthier, Dave O'Hara and Bill Furr. Wait..did I say Bill Furr? Yep, Furr is here lending a tuning hand to Hell Racing's Dave O'Hara. "I'm about as far away from home as I can get, Furr said this morning, after making the trip from South Carolina. O'Hara took the win at Denver's, Rocky Mountain Nitro Nationals, and he and Furr apparently have a plan in motion for this weekend. Stay tuned to see just what it is. Red Line Oil's Tim Kerrigan is teched in for competition following an impressive Pro Fuel win in Denver. Pro Fuel Champion, Steve Lundstrom will get a shot at Kerrigan this weekend after having to sit out the Denver race, when he blew his motor during Friday's test and tune session. Steve Heidner is also on the list of Pro Fuel competitors today. Carolina Kenworth Pro Drag Champion, Marc Augustine is making his first appearance of the season. Augustine never lost a round during the 2000 season, and although a favorite, he's got good competition ahead with, hometown favorite, Steve Huff and Oregon's Steve Dorn on tap. In Dynojet Street Pro, the line-up seems to be missing a few regulars. Champion, and current points leader, Travis Lummus decided to head home after Denver and rest up for Budd's Creek after winning two in a row, and so far, no sign of Ray Devine, who finished 2nd to Lummus at the past two events. Rod Cavanuagh is here, along with the Burley's, Verl "Smitty" Smith, Randy Borho to name a few.
I'll be back with more when qualifying gets underway!
Back from Seattle International Raceway..Round One qualifying is complete and the O'Hara/Furr plan is definately in motion. O'Hara leads qualifying after a 7.127/187.30. Here's the results of Round One!

Elimination Day in Seattle! Good morning from Seattle. Another beautiful day here at Seattle International Raceway and after practice rounds were complete, it looks like a great day of competition is ahead. Hell Racing's Dave O'Hara started practice rounds out with a 7.013/197.62, and Houniet followed with a 6.990/201.11. Just a teaser of what's coming! Pro Stock dominator, Tom Bradford says he will have another record for me to post today, and he's not kidding, after a 7.553/171.42 practice run. A great show is definately coming, when we get underway at 12:30pm. (Seattle time) Other highlights already happening this morning included the Children's Ride 6 which rolled in 1300 riders and counting! It was amazing, and all for a good cause. The proceeds go to the Children's Hospital, right here in Seattle. More from the gernerosity of the AHDRA racers and fans..at this morning's driver's meeting, more well wishes for Dale Nungesser and Rocky Mann and a touching moment, when raceteams came forward, donating nearly $2000 to aid in Dale & Rocky's care. A special thank you to Kris Becker for heading all of this up, and most of all, to everyone for being so generous.
Round One of Top Fuel is underway..I'll be back with the news soon!

Top Fuel Harleys NHRA Debut:
We had a great turnout at the Bremerton Raceway for the debut of Top Fuel Harley competition in the NHRA. For race results and 6 pages of photos, click here , when link is up, scroll page to the right (photos laid out on right side of page): Thanks again to Larry Pfister at Horsepowerheaven.com for all the great coverage!!
AHDRA Arizona Nationals Update:
Steve Huff and the Znetix Nitro Harley Race Team take the lead in the Western division AHDRA. After securing the #2 qualifying spot in the Pro-Dragster category on Saturday, the Znetix Nitro Harley Team was able to march through each round of eliminations to get into the finals on Sunday. The final round paired the Znetix team against Larry Brancaccio of New Jersey. The Znetix Team's 7.91 seconds elapsed time at 167 mph was not quite enough to beat out Larry's time of 7.81 seconds at 161 mph. Finishing in the runner up position places the Znetix team in 1st place in the Western Division points standing and 2nd place in the National points standing.
Due to the extremely poor conditions of the race track surface the Znetix Team elected not to compete with the Top Fuel bike. The Znetix Top Fuel Harley will be making it's debut appearance at the NHRA US National Open, May 12th and 13th in Bremerton, WA.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsor Znetix and our associate sponsors: S&S Cycle, Downtown Harley Davidson, NGK Spark Plugs, Cryogenicsunlimited.com, Custom Classics, Mighty Auto Parts, Performance Coatings, Heavy Metal Polish,Vanson Leathers, Royal Purple and special thanks to Jack & Tony Bielinski and the Bielinski family, Big Tim, and the Ruggiero Top Fuel Team, Dave, John, and Cayce.
See ya at the races!! |
